Alterations in fatty acid composition due to cold exposure at the vegetative stage in rice Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Golombieski,Jaqueline Ineu; Bazana,Maiara Taís; Cabreira,Caroline; Silveira,Taíse Foletto; Silva,Leila Picolli da.
Rice is a tropical plant, so cold temperature may be detrimental to its development, depending on the genotype and environmental conditions. Degree of lipid unsaturation has been related to cold tolerance due to its effect on membrane stability. So, the aim of this study was to characterize the fatty acid composition and its alterations due to cold temperature in rice genotypes of diversified origin. Forty-four rice genotypes at the V4 stage were submitted to two temperature conditions: 10°C and 28°C for two days and after this they had their leaves collected for lipid extraction and quantification. Control plants were allowed to regrow until presenting four leaves fully expanded and then were subjected to 10°C for ten days for cold tolerance evaluation....

Assessment of oocyte and trochophore quality in Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Boulais, Myrina; Corporeau, Charlotte; Huvet, Arnaud; Bernard, Ismael; Quere, Claudie; Quillien, Virgile; Fabioux, Caroline; Suquet, Marc.
Pacific oyster hatchery production remains highly variable, partially due to inconsistent gamete quality. However, little attention has been paid to oocyte quality in Pacific oyster compared to important vertebrate aquaculture species such as fishes. The aims of the present study were to identify criteria of oocyte and trochophore quality used as predictive tools for embryo developmental success at the D-larval stage. Twenty-six potential proxies of oocyte and trochophore quality were studied on 25 mature females, as determined using histology. Some morphological and biochemical characteristics of mature oocytes were described. Protein appeared to be the main constituent of fully mature Pacific oyster oocytes. Neutral lipids accounted for 61% of the total...

BRACCINI,ALESSANDRO DE LUCCA E; REIS,MÚCIO SILVA; MOREIRA,MAURÍLIO ALVES; SEDIYAMA,CARLOS SIGUEYUKI; SCAPIM,CARLOS ALBERTO.
A work was carried out with the purpose of verifying the biochemical changes associated to soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeds osmoconditioning. Seeds of the UFV 10, IAC 8 and Doko RC cultivars harvested at R8 development stage and submitted to different treatments were used. The biochemical evaluations were performed during seed storage, after the hydration-dehydration process. Initially, seeds were osmoconditioned in a polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution, with the osmotic potential of -0.8 MPa and 20ºC, for a period of four days. After that, seeds were dried back until the initial moisture content (10-11%) and stored in natural conditions for three and six months. Two controls were used: untreated seeds (dry seeds) and water soaked seeds. Seed...

Cephalic salivary glands of two species of advanced eusocial bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae): morphology and secretion Rev. Bras. Zool.
Poiani,Silvana B.; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
Some adult eusocial bees have a pair of cephalic salivary glands (CSG) in addition to the thoracic labial or salivary gland pairs. This paper deals with variations in morphological features and secretion production of the CSG of females and males of Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 and Scaptotrigona postica Latreille, 1807. The following life stages were studied: newly emerged, nurse, and forager workers; newly emerged and egg-laying queens; and newly emerged and sexually mature males. The histological results showed that the CSG differs between the two species in the following features: while alveoli and duct cells are cuboidal in workers and queens of A. mellifera, they change from cuboidal to flat in S. postica as the workers age. The glands of newly...

Changes of the Total Lipid and Omega-3 Fatty Acid Contents in two Microalgae Dunaliella Salina and Chlorella Vulgaris Under Salt Stress BABT
Rismani,Sharare; Shariati,Mansour.
ABSTRACT Effect of salt stress on biomass, cell number, contents of total lipid, omega-3 fatty acids, including ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and their biosynthetic pathway intermediates (palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid) of two microalgae Dunaliella salina and Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. Dilution stress from 1.5 to 0.5 M NaCl and salt stress from 1.5 to 3 M NaCl were incorporated into the D. salina medium. Salt stress of 200 mM NaCl was also applied to C. vulgaris culture. Results indicated that increasing salt concentration resulted in the reduced growth rate of C. vulgaris and substantial increase of the total lipid content in both species. Proper growth rate of...

Chill-induced changes in fatty acid composition of tonoplast vesicles from hypocotyls of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Oliveira,Luciana M. N. de; Sobreira,Alana C. de M.; Monteiro,Fernando de P.; Melo,Dirce F. de.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the changes induced by chilling on fatty acid composition of tonoplast vesicles from hypocotyls of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. The 7 day-old control seedlings were grown at 25°C while treated seedlings were submitted to low temperatures (10°C and 4°C) for 4 days after 3 days germination. The chilling stress resulted in a differential inhibition of plant growth at 10°C and 4°C. Following chilling at 10°C and 4°C, the rate of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids increased under chilling stress. Our results suggest that the increase of unsaturated fatty acids content as well as the higher rate unsaturated/saturate fatty acidsmight be used by V. unguiculata plants as an adaptation mechanism likely to maintain...

Comparative proteomics reveals proteins impacted by nitrogen deprivation in wild-type and high lipid-accumulating mutant strains of Tisochrysis lutea ArchiMer
Garnier, Matthieu; Carrier, Gregory; Rogniaux, Helene; Nicolau, Elodie; Bougaran, Gael; Saint-jean, Bruno; Cadoret, Jean-paul.
Understanding microalgal lipid accumulation under nitrogen starvation is of major interest for biomass feedstock, food and biofuel production. Using a domesticated oleaginous algae Tisochrysis lutea, we performed the first comparative proteomic analysis on the wild type strain and a selected lipid over-accumulating mutant. 2-DE analysis was made on these strains cultured in two metabolic conditions, with and without nitrogen deprivation, which revealed significant differences in proteomes according to both strain and nitrogen availability. Mass spectrometry allowed us to identify 37 proteins that were differentially expressed between the two strains, and 17 proteins regulated by nitrogen starvation concomitantly with lipid accumulation. The proteins...

Comparative transcriptome analysis of the hippocampus from sleep-deprived and Alzheimer’s disease mice Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wei,Yi.
Abstract We did a comparative analysis of the gene expression profiles of the hippocampus from sleep deprivation and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mice. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by comparing the transcriptome profiles of the hippocampus of sleep deprivation or AD mouse models to matched controls. The common DEGs between sleep deprivation and AD were identified by the overlapping analysis, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. The results showed that a total of 16 common DEGs showed similar change patterns in both sleep deprivation mice and AD mice. Sgk1, Ly6a, Atp6v0e, Hspb8, Htra1, Pdk4, Pfkfb3, Golm1, and Plin3 were up-regulated in the two disorders, whereas, Marcksl1, Fgd1,...

Delivery of riboflavin to larval and adult pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg by lipid spray beads ArchiMer
Langdon, Cj; Seguineau, Catherine; Ponce, B; Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois.
Lipid spray beads (SB) were prepared containing 13% w/w particulate riboflavin. Beads suspended in seawater lost 73% riboflavin after 24 h. Release of riboflavin from SE ingested by Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) larvae was observed under epifluorescent light. Riboflavin concentrations in tissues of adult oysters fed on riboflavin-SB were significantly (SNK, P < 0.05) greater than those of oysters fed on seawater-filled SE. Concentrations of riboflavin in oysters exposed to dissolved riboflavin were not significantly greater than those of oysters fed on seawater-filled SE: indicating that elevated riboflavin concentrations in oysters fed on riboflavin-SB were attributable to breakdown of ingested beads rather than uptake of dissolved riboflavin...

Our study evaluated how the consumption of diets with low (LOW group - 0.4/1) or high (CON group - 13.6/1) omega-6/omega-3 ratio across generations (F1 and F2) can modulate liver fatty acid (FA) profile and blood biomarkers. Liver content of α-linolenic acid was higher in animals always fed with LOW diet than animals that changed from CON to LOW diet, which by your time was higher than animals always fed with CON diet. Liver saturated FA concentration decreased in both groups from F1 to F2. In conclusion, both diets were efficient in decreasing the saturated FA liver content across generations, the LOW ratio diet was more effective in reducing blood triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids, and there was a multigenerational effect of the LOW ratio...

Atherosclerosis is a coronary disease where deposition of lipids in the arteries leads to problems of blood circulation. The present work evaluates the action of the flavonoids morin, quercetin and nicotinic acid isolated in association on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic rats. Blood serum levels cholesterol, cholesterol-HDL, and triacylglycerids have been analysed following the intraperitoneal administration of the flavonoid compounds dissolved in propyleneglycol by in doses of 5mg/kg body weight. Quercetin presented the largest percentual reduction of cholesterol. The best results for cholesterol-HDL have been obtained with-nicotinic acid alone while morin-nicotinic acid combination showed the best triacylglycerols results. Results showed that...

Effect of lipid level in a compound diet on the development of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) larvae ArchiMer
Buchet, Vincent; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
Red drum larvae were fed from day 11 to day 24 post-hatch, with Artemia (LP group) or two isoproteinic-formulated diets with varying lipid levels, 15% (L15 group) and 30% (L30 group). The lipid fraction was composed of a mixture of cod liver oil and soy lecithin. Larvae fed Artemia exhibited the greatest length, L30 diet induced a larvae length significantly greater than that obtained with L15 diet (P < 0,05). No difference was observed in larvae survival among the three dietary groups. The increase in dietary lipid concentration led to an increase in amylase and trypsin secretion levels in 24-day-old larvae. The pancreatic secretion level measured in L30 group was close to that of LP group, suggesting that the maturation of the pancreatic functions was...

Enzyme activity and reserve mobilization during Macaw palm ( Acrocomia aculeata ) seed germination Acta Botanica
Bicalho,Elisa Monteze; Motoike,Sérgio Yoshimitsu; Lima e Borges,Eduardo Euclydes de; Ataíde,Glauciana da Mata; Guimarães,Valéria Monteze.
ABSTRACT Reserve mobilization in seeds occurs after visible germination, which is marked by the protrusion of the radicle or cotyledonary petiole, as in species of Arecaceae. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm), usually produces hard seeds whose endosperm has mannan-rich cell walls. We investigated the composition of storage compounds in macaw palm seed and the roles of two enzymes (endo-β-mannanase, α-galactosidase) during and after germination. The seeds were firstly submitted to pre-established protocol to overcome dormancy and promote germination. Enzyme activity in both embryo and endosperm were assayed from the initiation of germinative activities until leaf sheath appearance, and the status of seed structures and reserve compounds were evaluated....

Expression analysis for genes involved in arachidonic acid biosynthesis in Mortierella alpina CBS 754.68 BJM
Samadlouie,Hamid-Reza; Hamidi-Esfahani,Zohreh; Alavi,Seyed-Mehdi; Varastegani,Boshra.
The time courses for production of fungal biomass, lipid, phenolic and arachidonic acid (ARA) as well as expression of the genes involved in biosynthesis of ARA and lipid were examined in Mortierella alpina CBS 754.68. A significant increase in the arachidonic acid content in lipids that coincided with reduced levels of lipid was obtained. Reduced gene expression occurred presumably due to the steady reduction of carbon and nitrogen resources. However, these energy resources were inefficiently compensated by the breakdown of the accumulated lipids that in turn, induced up-regulated expression of the candidate genes. The results further indicated that the expression of the GLELO encoding gene is a rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of ARA in the early...
